Oscars 2024: Academy Unveils Eligible Animated, Documentary, and International Feature Films

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the full list of films eligible for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards. This year’s competition features 31 animated films, 169 documentaries, and 85 international submissions vying for nominations in their respective categories.

Animated Features

The animated category includes major studio productions like Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Universal/DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot, alongside standout independent projects such as Memoir of a Snail. Interestingly, Warner Bros.’ initially shelved project, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, found a new distributor in Ketchup Entertainment and remains in contention.

The full animated feature list highlights fan favorites like Kung Fu Panda 4, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and Moana 2, alongside fresh concepts like Sultana’s Dream and Art College 1994.

Documentary Features

The documentary race includes critically acclaimed titles and intriguing newcomers. Highlights include:

  • Nat Geo’s Sugarcane
  • Netflix’s Daughters
  • MTV’s Black Box Diaries
  • Projects with notable executive producers such as Malala Yousafzai (Bread & Roses, The Last of the Sea Women) and Jennifer Lawrence (Bread & Roses, Zurawski v Texas).

Other notable entries include political commentary (Am I Racist?), exposés (The Bibi Files), and environmental stories (Escape from Extinction Rewilding).

International Features

This year’s international submissions feature strong entries from:

  • France: Netflix’s Emilia Perez.
  • Brazil: Sony Classics’ I’m Still Here.
  • Germany: Neon’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig.

China’s initial entry, The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru, was disqualified for not meeting the Academy’s language requirements, though it remains eligible as a documentary.

Other intriguing submissions include Iceland’s Touch, Kenya’s Nawi, and India’s Lost Ladies.
